History of lavandin
Lavandin is a plant resulting from a natural cross between Aspic lavender(Lavandula Latifolia) and True lavender(Lavandula Angustifolia).
This plant is much more vigorous than lavender and yields more per hectare.
Lavandin is another member of the Lamiaceae family.
There are several varieties of lavender grown on the plateau, including lavandin grosso, lavandin super and lavandin sumian.
Lavandin grows at altitudes of 200 meters and above, and can be recognized by its size, purple flowers and perfectly arranged spikes.
Lavender distillation methods
Distilling a plant involves passing steam through the flower to extract its essential oil.
The pre-cut lavandin flower is piled into a vat, through which steam flows and extracts the pistillate from the flower, which contains the essential oil. The steam-gasoline mixture rises in the swan neck, then cools in the coil. After condensation, it becomes liquid again. The oil rises to the surface, as it is lighter than water.
The essencier is fitted with two taps: the higher one collects the
essential oil
and the lower to remove the distilled water: “hydrolat”.
There are two ways of distilling:
The conventional method: flowers and stems are crushed and rapidly distilled.
The traditional method: cut stems and flowers are not crushed, but collected after at least a day’s drying in the fields and then distilled.
50% of the world’s lavandin essential oil is produced in France.
Properties of lavandin grosso
Today, lavandin is mainly used in perfumes and detergents.
It is also used in aromatherapy for its anti-burn, soothing and muscle-relaxing properties.
It is also highly effective against lice, moths…
Lavandin is not edible.
A few tips for use
Against lice: 4 drops behind the ears (put some on children’s wrists 24 hours beforehand to prevent an allergic reaction).
Against moths: 3 drops on a cloth in cupboards.
Against mosquitoes: 5 drops in a diffuser.
You can put a cap in the mop bucket or in the detergent, replacing the fabric softener.
